Axum Cosmodrome

Axum Cosmodrome is the upcoming project conceived and created by Lucien Johnson. Drawing from his studies of African modes and rhythms and inspired by the free form improvising of 1970s era Space-age Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, Axum Cosmodrome brings together a range of influences under the umbrella of an Afro-Futurist approach to music making.

It is a combination of the organic and the synthetic, or to quote from Sun Ra, of “Tone Science” and “Machine Mythology”, where traditional African rhythms are thrown together with swirling synthesizers and emphatic brass riffs to create a uniquely cosmogonic experience.

Axum Cosmodrome is also a platform for some of New Zealand’s most exciting musical prospects such as drummer Myele Manzanza, formerly of Electric Wire Hustle and recently returned from his own projects touring across Europe, and internationally respected guitarist Justin Clarke.
